I've been exactly where you are.​

I kept makeup by my bed so my partner never saw my bare skin when he woke up. I'd cover spots in toothpaste every night because that's what you did when I was in my 20s - because someone somewhere said it worked, and when you're desperate, you try everything.​

I'd check my face before every meeting. Sit at the back of the room so nobody could see the cyst on my jaw up close. Cancel plans if my skin was bad. Avoid anything involving a swimming pool, a gym class, or sweat, because that meant makeup came off, and makeup coming off felt catastrophic.

I tried cutting out dairy. And when I slipped up and enjoyed some cheese, I'd think: "Well, I've already blown it", and eat everything I'd been avoiding in one go. That cycle of restriction and bingeing lasted years. My skin was miserable. I was miserable.

Then, through my daughter, she had reflux and eczema, and one small dietary change which transformed her overnight, I stumbled into nutritional therapy. The more I learned, the more I understood that there's no single answer for everyone. Cutting out dairy didn't fix my skin because dairy wasn't my problem. My gut was, and this was impacting my hormones. My mineral status was a mess, and this was impacting my ability to detox properly and handle stress effectively. Let alone the impact my low iron was having on my fatigue. â€‹

 

I left my marketing career, did a postgraduate degree in Personalised Nutrition, and worked on my own body properly. Not with elimination and rules, but with science-backed understanding.
